Operation Walküre (Satis Shroff)

Ceude de Gurs (c) Aquarelle by Max Linger ‘Operation Walküre’ was Hitler’s own Emergency Plan which was used by Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg to put an end to the Fuehrer, take over his Nazi regime and remove the Third Reich’s military and political administrators and replace them with his own men. Stauffenberg and his men risked their own lives, and those of their own families, for the fate of millions of people. The old war heroes are slowing disappearing with Alzheimer, Parkinson’s and other diseases in gerontological homes, and many in their own four walls. I’m awfully glad and proud that our children are taught about the holocaust in their schools (Abitur classes), that there are memorials, museums and that school-kids have to write essays about Anne Frank, Schindler’s List, the Third Reich and that school classes and students go to see where, and how it happened in the concentration camps in Germany, Poland, France and elsewhere: lest we forget. Germany does have quite a few resistance heroes, and if more people had the desire to show civil courage like Stauffenberg, Sophie Scholl and a host of others, then such atrocities like World War II, Auschwitz and other concentration- camp genocides would not have happened. I think that the Germans, as a folk, have learned their lessons well. The Education Departments in the 16 Federal States of Germany are doing a good job by keeping the young people informed about the hoary past, in addition to Germany’s great history by organising memorials, seminars, exhibitions and multimedia events. Actually, the idea to undermine the Hitler regime with the help of Hitler’s own Walküre plans through the implementation of the Auxillary Army to mow down revolts, was General Olbricht’s brain-child. In ‘Operation Walküre,’ however, it is shown as Stauffenberg’s geistesblitz to assassinate Hitler and to put the blame on the SS and Nazi big shots, and to use the ‘Walküre’ plans to make the Nazis surrender their weapons. According to Norse mythology, Walküren were those who decided who ought to die in the battlefield. In Germanic mythology, the messengers of the highest God Wodan (Odin), ride over the killing-fields and give the slain eternal life by means of a kiss and take them to Asgard, whereby Asen is the mightiest dynasty of Gods with Odin (Wodan) at the top, seconded by Thor (Donar), Baldr, Zyr (Zin) and Frigg (also known as Frija , Frea). Odin was the sovereign God, whom the Germanic dynasties of England and Scandinavia, originally regarded as their divine founder. These Gods are perhaps a reflection of the tripartite division of the Indo-European society into: priest, warrior and cultivator. Some years back on Thomas Gottschalk’s ‘Wetten, dass’ TV show, Mittermeier, a popular tongue-in-cheek cabaretist said as a joke that instead of Hitler, Tom Cruise would have done well to have laid the leader of the Scientology church cold, which caused a big laugh. Mittermeier’s parody of Obama and Merkel brought the house down with more laughter. In Germany’s first channel ARD Oliver Pocher, a comedian moderated a show (Schmidt & Pcher) dressed as Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, complete with an eye-patch, and the blurb: “You can see better with the First (Channel). The chairman of the ARD Herr Volker Stich wasn’t amused and said, ‘Herr Pocher didn’t do the ARD any good.’ If this fun-making goes on in in good olde Germany, then a lot of Stauffenbergs-in-uniform will be appearing during the Carnival (Fasnet) next month. Who was Claus Stauffenberg really? He was a noble German, a count, who lived in the Castle of Jettingen, which lies in the vicinity of Günzburg. He was born in November 15, 1907 and shot by the Nazi execution squad in Berlin on July 20, 1944. Stauffenberg was an officer and resistance fighter. He did his military duty in Poland and France. Between 1940-43 he worked in the organisation department of the General Staff of the Army. He belonged to the German elite, was conservative, but was also open to new social changes, and was initially impressed by Hitler’s success. He developed a growing skepsis regarding the national socialist politics of conquest, critic on the military, Hitler’s mistakes and his disgust regarding the terror meted out to the people of the conquered countries culminated in his decision to be ready for the revolt in 1942. Claus Stauffenberg was severely wounded in April 1943 in North Africa. He was promoted to the rank of Stabschef in the Reich’s army department and became the force behind the diverging resistance groups. Since July 1, 1944 he had access to Hitler’s HQ as an Oberst. He personally carried out the plan to blow up the Führer on July 20, 1944 and flew to Berlin because he was a key figure in carrying out and coordinating the technical plans of the operation to take over the state. Even though there are still old and neo-nazis who raise their voices now and then in Germany even today, we believe in the norms and values of democracy: freedom of opinion, cultures, togetherness (Miteinander) and vive la difference. Yes we can, as you can see. Come to Germany and see it for yourself. Stauffenberg’s last words in the film are: ‘Long live holy Germany! Es lebe das heilige Deutschland!’ before he is riddled by a firing squad on the night of July 20, 1944. The attempt to assassinate the Führer backfired, but for many Germans it was a sign, a symbol for another Germany which has lasted even to this day. The men and women of July 20, 1944 were instrumental in shaping the goals (Leitbild) of the present-day Bundeswehr, which is battling against the Talibans in Afghanistan, keeping-off pirates in Somalia and elsewhere, and will be seeing action in Mali soon, is a Nato member and works closely with the USA and has a brigade together with the French army, not to speak of its many development projects in many poor countries. If you’d like to visit the Military Archive located at the Wiesentalstrasse 10 in Freiburg, just give them a call: 0761-47817-801 and ask for Herr Michael Steidel. Tom Cruise’s ‘Valkyrie’ crew were at the Archive two weeks long to do their research on German SS and Gestapo uniforms, documents and other historical paraphernalia. At the Military Archiv you’ll find five halls and 55km of files dating back from 1867 till today. On January 27, 2009 like in many other European cities, we Freiburger remember the ‘Persecution Children and Youth from 1933 till 1945’ as the day of liberation of the prisoners from the concentration camp in Ausschwitz in 1945, and we discuss about the families that were separated from the German mainstream in those days, persecuted and exterminated by the National Socialists (Nazis). Their only crime was that they were: Jews, Sintis, Romas, Jehova’s witnesses or disabled human beings, who were regarded as lesser beings in comparison to the so-called master Germanic race. The youth will have a chance to speak to witnesses and survivors of the holocaust who still live in Freiburg or have been invited to speak about their sad, moving, traumatic experiences. In the German language we call them Zeitzeugen, time-witnesses.

Hartheimer Herbstkonzert: Gesang erfreut das Herz (Satis Shroff) Gesang verschönt das Leben, Gesang erfreut das Herz, ihn hat uns Gott gegeben, zu lindern Sorg und Schmerz. In der gut besetzten „Seltenbachhalle“ in Hartheim-Feldkirch begrüßte und stellte die Moderatorin-cum-Vorsitzende Barbara Locherer-Kuhs von Gesangverein 1863 e.V. Hartheim das Programm des Herbstkonzertes 2012 vor. Oberhalb der festlich geschmückten Bühne, hing die Vereinsfahne mit dem Motto: „Ne Gesang in Ehre, wer wills’ verwehre.“ Der Gesangabend fing mit Friedrich Silchers Lied:„Nun leb wohl, du kleine Gasse“ an. Dann wurde ein wunderbares Weinlied „In jedem vollen Glase Wein“ vom Gemischten Chor Gesangsverein 1863 e.V. Hartheim gesungen. Der Frauenchor sang: „Hey, das ist Musik für dich,“ ein internationales Lied, arrangiert von Eckhart Hehrer, gefolgt von „ Die kleine Kneipe“ (Pasquale Thibaut). Der Männerchor erinnerte uns, wie schön der beginn von einem Tag sein kann mit „Der Morgen ist frisch“ (Robert Pappert) und dem „Badewasser-Lied,“ was sehr amüsant war, denn es hieß „lass mich dein Badewasser schlurfen.“ Der Gemischter Chor „Liedertafel“ aus Freiburg-Haslach mit 28 SängerInnen war als nächstes dran. Die Damen trugen weiße Blusen und blauen Halstücher und die Männer weiße Hemden. Sie sangen „Freedom is Coming.“ Dann folgte „Love me Tender“ ein Elvis Presley Schlager (Chorarrangement:Vera Matson), „Über sieben Brücken“ (Uli Führe), Oh, Happy Day (ein Gospellied mit Chorarrangement von Otto Groll) und anschließend „Singen ist Leben“ (Irische Weise, bekannt als der Ohrwurm von Cat Stevens „Morning has Broken.“ Der Deutsche Text wurde von Weber-Müllenbach geschrieben. Es gab „We are the World“ (M. Jackson) als Zugabe. Die Sänger, vom Männergesangverein Kappel unter der Leitung von Dirigent Johannes Söllner, fingen mit „Frischer gesungen“ (Adalbert von Chamillo / Friedrich Silcher)an, was auch „alles war hübsch und gut“ war, wie im Gesangstext. Der MGV sang das Lied sehr lebendig und mit gutem Klang, obwohl einige Sänger wegen Krankheit fehlten. Diagnose: Grippale Infekt. Das zweite Lied war das frech gesungene „Maidle lass die was verzählen“ was gut bei dem Publikum ankam. Das dritte Lied ging ans Herz, da es sehr gefühlvoll gesungen war, „Durch’s Wiesetal gang i jetzt na“ und brachte viel Applaus. Johannes Söllner moderierte die Lieder und erzählte die Geschichte von der Entstehung von seinem weltberühmten Stück:“Der Gefangenenchor“ aus der Oper „Nabucco.“ Tösender Applaus. Mit dem letzten Lied „Bild dir nichts ein“brachte der Männergesangverein die Zuschauer wieder zum Alltag, denn wir sind alle Menschen,ob arm oder reich, liebvoll oder hasserfüllt sind, denn wir alle haben unsere stärken und schwächen. „Du bist ein Mensch, kann’s weiter nicht sein.“ Der MGV zeigte wie lebendig Chorgesang sein kann. Nach der Pause gab es eine mongolische Folklore mit Badamkhorol Samdandamba im Kimono, mit schwarzen Haaren und einem turmähnlichen Hut. Sie sang mit ihren Schwestern Badamkhand und Bat-Otgon, alle drei sind sie reizende Damen aus Ulan-Bator. Badamkhorol began mit einem lang gesungenen Dialog zwischen der Erde und dem Himmel. Ein nordmongolischer ausgedehnter Gesang, begleitet von schamanistischen Glocken, die die weiten Steppen der Mongolai evoziert gesungen wurde. Die Seltenbachhalle war still und die Zuschauer lauschten. Es ging weiter mit Liedern über mongolische Pferde, die Atagebirge und über ein „schönes Pferd.“ Der Gemischte Chor „Eintracht Freiburg St. Georgen, gekleidet in Rouge-Noir-Look, trugen „Mir geht’s gut“ (Werner Bochmann/ Dieter Frommelt) vor. Danach kamen Lieder aus dem Musical „Oklahoma“ (Richard Rodgers) gesungen auf Deutsch: „Das Kutscherlied,“ „Dorftanz auf der Tenne,“ Oklahoma Titellied und ein Traditional aus Lateinamerika: „Un poquito cantas.“ Als nächstes kamen der Frauenchor Gesangsverein 1863 Hartheim mit „Hör in den Klang der Stimme“ (Lorenz Maierhofer) und ein Schlager aus den 60er Jahren: „Ich will keine Schokolade“ (Pasquale Thibaut). Der Männerchor Gesangsverein 1863 Hartheim verwöhnte uns mit zwei Liedern: „Herr Wirt“ (Peter Hilfinger) und „I’m Bound Away“(Donald Moore). Danach präsentierte der Gemischte Chor Gesangvserein 1863 Hartheim mit einer Widmung an ein Sänger aus dem Chor, der gerade 66 geworden war. Sie sangen „Mit 66 Jahren“ ein „Evergreen“ Schlager von Udo Jürgens, gefolgt von einem Hauch von Paris mit „O, Champs Elysees“ (Mike Witsch). Am Schluß der Veranstaltung bekamen Klaus Sütterle, Badamkhorol und anderen Gastevorsitzende von Barbara Locherer-Kuhs viele Präsente und Dankworte, auch für die vielen Helfer hinter den Kulissen. ** * Kappel Singt Miteinander: Oma liebt Opa-pa (Satis Shroff) Im Kindergarten in Kappel waren Grosseltern und Eltern eingeladen. Es war ein wunderschöner Herbsttag und die Kleinen und Großen waren alle draußen im Garten versammelt. Mit dabei waren die Mitglieder vom Männergesangverein-Kappel "Liederkranz," die seit einigen Jahren die Patenschaft übernommen haben für einen „singendes Kindergarten.“ Der Kappler Kindergarten ist ausgezeichnet worden mit der Felixplakette vom Badischen Singerbund. Wolfgang Busse war der stellvertretender Dirigent an diesem Nachmittag. Es passte einfach alles. Es war schön die kleinen Kinder und die Männer vom MGV zusammen singen zu erleben. Die Kinder präsentierten sich mit großer Singfreude. Die MGV-Kappel sangen drei Lieder mit den Kindern: „Ayengena“ und „Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus.“ Eine Erzieherin erwähnte:“ Seitdem die Kinder ein bestimmtes Lied gelernt hatten, wurde es zum Lieblingslied im Kindergarten und man hörte das Lied häufig.“ Es war keine anderes als „Evening Rise (Native American Lied) gesungen auf Deutsch. Das Lied durfte an jenem Tag auch auf gar keinen Fall fehlen und wurde zusammen mit den MGV von den Kindern gesungen. Begleitet wurden die Lieder mit einfühlsamen Klängen von drei Gitarristinnen. Die Harmonie von Jung und Alt war offensichtlich. Die Kindergartenerzieherinnen hatten eine schöne Liederwahl bezogen auf die Grosseltern vorbereitet und die Kinder tanzten mit ihren Opas und Omas zusammen. Die Kinder sangen mit ihre Erzieherinnen folgende Lieder: „Ich sag Hallo,“ „Das ist gerade,“ „Brüderchen komm,“ „Wir sind die Kindergartenkinder“ gefolgt von „Oma liebt Opapa.“ Rührend war es zu erleben wie die Kinder mit Fröhlichkeit und Ungezwungenheit die Lieder vortrugen. Und als es Vorbei war mit dem singen, wurden wir alle eingeladen zum Kuchen und Kaffee. Wir nahmen es dankend an. Ein herrlicher Nachmittag. Es gab auch noch Geschenke am Schluss. Eine Rege Patenschaft ist es, ein Miteinander in Kappel. Beim gemütlichen Kaffee und Kuchen erzählten die Männer vom MGV-Kappel, wie es früher gewesen war. Adolf Freßle sagte, „Früher als ich klein war, gab es kein Kindergarten wegen dem Krieg. Wir mussten arbeiten in unserem Bauernhof. Ganz früh aufstehen, die Kühe melken, Holz sammeln gehen für das Feuer daheim. Als Kinder hatten wir immer etwas zu tun.“ Richard Linder erzählte, „Ich bin mit dem Holzschlitten den Berg hinunter gefahren und pünktlich in der Schule zu sein. Die Dorfschule war streng.“ Herrlich war es mit den Erzieherinnen und Kindergarten Kindern zu singen. Danach gingen wir all glücklich nach Hause mit schönen Erinnerungen. * * * Volkstümlichem Abend in Kappel (Satis Shroff, Schriftführer,www.mgv-kappel.de) Allemanische Gedicht aus "Krut un Rueve" von Fritz Broßner gelesen von Michael Stotz (MGV-Kappel) Der Männergesangverein-Kappel hat die Leute von Dreisamtal eingeladen zu einem volkstümlichem Abend in Kappels Gemeindehaus am 26.Mai 2012. Volkslied gehört zu eine wertvollen Genre und ist fest verankert in der Deutschen Seele. Obwohl es starke Konkurrenz aus Baku (Eurovision Song Contest im Fernsehen) gab, kamen treue Kappeler und andere Dreisamtal Bewohner zu der Konzert, um eine schöne Abend zu feiern mit Heimatliedern, allemanischen Gedichten und fröhlichen Beisammen. Der Volkstümlichen Abend begann um 20:Uhr und der mit Holzverzierten Saal wurde geschmückt von den Sängerfrauen. Auf dem Tisch waren Sträuße bestehend aus: Lichtnelken, weiße Margariten, Frauenmantel und Kornblumen, die in der Getreidefelder wachsen. Der MGV-Kappel sang in dreier Etappen gefolgt von Michael Stotz mit seine Allemanischen Gedichten und der ehemaliger Eisenbahner, Conferencier Walter Fuß und seine Schwarzwälder Geschichten, getragen mit Humor und Elan. Der MGV-Kappel sang: „Nun Ade, Du mein lieb Heimatland (Volkslied), “Bild dir nichts ein„ „Ei du Mädchen vom Lande“ (ein Hohenlohisches Volkslied), „Durch’s Wiesetal gang i“ (ein wehmütiges Volkslied aus dem badischen Schwarzwald von Friedrich Silcher), „Am Brünnen vor dem Tore,“ „s’ Herz“ (ein Schwäbisches Lied), „Der Mond ist aufgegangen“ (Weise von Joh. P.A. Schulz, 1747-1800), „ Sonnenaufgang“ wurde langsam feierlich gesungen (Peter Cornelius, 1843), „Abendfrieden“ von Hildegard Eckhardt, „Das Morgen Rot“ (Gedicht von Dr. K. Hoffmann), und „Frisch Gesungen!“ (ein Lied von Adalbert von Chamisso). Walter Fuß brachte das Publikum zum lachen mit seine Geschichte von einem Allemanen, der versuchte Hochdeutsch zu sprechen. Da Walter ein pensionierter Eisenbahner ist, konnte er nicht kneifen heitere Eisenbahn Geschichten zu erzählen. Seine weitere Geschichten waren über Taxifahrer, das Finanzamt und Weihnachtsscherze. Michael Stotz dagegen rezitierte allerhand luschtigi Vortrags schtückli u.a. aus dem Buch „Krut und Ruewe“ von Fritz Broßmer (1891-1963). Die allemanischer Dichtung ist bekannt dafür immer gesunden Humor in einfachen Gewand der Mundart zu bieten. Michael hat eine wunderbare sonore Bassstimme und er hat häufig in allemanischer Mundart in der Dreisamtal, Waldhaus Freiburg und anders wo in der Regio vorträge gehalten. So las er: „s’guet Veschper,“ „’s lieb Marieli,“ „Ebbis Args,“ „Nit e Wunder,“ „Au e Lob,“ „E reumüetiger Sünder,“ „’s kennzeiche,“ „Ebbis vun dr Elektrizität,“ und „Naturgschicht.“ Als das offizielle Teil von der volkstümlichen Abend vorbei war, fingen Walter Fuß und seine sangesfreudige Familie an mit eine Reihe von Volkslieder und schon verteilt waren. Das Publikum war angetan und machte energisch mit. So sangen wir „Des Burebüeble mahg i nit,“ „Ade zu guten Nacht!“ „Im schönsten Wiesengrunde, „Guten Abend, Gute Nacht,“ „Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen, “ „Jetzt gang i ans Brünnele,“ „Kein schöner Land in dieser Zeit,“ „Sitz a klans Vogel im Tannenwald,“ „Wenn alle Brünnlein fließen,“ „Horch was kommt von draußen rein,“ „Auf dem Berg so hoch da droben,“ und „ Das wandern ist des Müllers Lust.“ Stephanie Dauer (Cello) und Johannes Söllner (Geige) verwohnten uns mit ein Hauch von Klassik. Ein harmonisches, eingespieltes Duo, in einklang Miteinander. Herr Söllner hat für das Kapplerpublikum extra ein Stück komponiert und ein Heuberger Stück dazu. Da es eine fröhliche Abend war, Connie Fuß ging rüber mit seine C-Harmonika zu unsere ehemaligen Solist und begleitete Spontan Albrecht Schmieder, der ein russisches Lied „Eine Weiße Birke,“ und „Schutt die Sorgen in ein Gläschen Wein“ sang in seine voluminöse Bass Stimme. Der Abend war so ansteckend, dass die Zuschauer ein Aufleben ihrer musikalischen Volkslied Erinnerungen erlebten. Es wirkte wie ein Stück Lebenshilfe und Lebensqualität in den Herzen von den Besuchern der volkstümliche Abend in Kappel. Wir machten uns auf dem Heimweg um 23:00 Uhr in fröhlichen Stimmung. Sogar Frau Geissler, 94 Jahre, die älteste MGV-Mitglied strahlte, als ich mich von ihre verabschiedete. * * * ng Concert in Ihringen, Germany (Satis Shroff) Sonntag, 15. April 2012 15:45:22 s' Herz, Springtime, Spring Concert, sailing, I know, Abba songs, Durchs Wiesetal gang i, heilige Himmelskönigin, Good News Frühlingskonzert in Ihringen 2012 (Satis Shroff) Frühling lässt sein blaues Band Wieder flatern durch die Lüfte.. Frühling, ja du bist’s Dich habe ich vernommen! (Eduard Mörikes 1804-1875) Mit beiden Zitaten werden heute meist scherzhaft die ersten Anzeichen des Frühlings in der Natur begrüßt. Ah, und nicht nur Menschen im reifen Alter bekommen Frühlingsgefühle; es ist das Sonnenlicht nach den ewigerscheinende Kalten und melancolisch wirkende Monaten. Jetzt ist plötzlich unsere Lebenserwachen da, wir freuen uns, wir lächeln, wir singen. Was kann schöner sein als eine Frühlingskonzert in Deutschlands sonnigste Weingegend Ihringen? Intermezzo Ihringen und Männergesangverein-Kappel haben etwas gemeinsam, nämlich der jung und dynamische Chordirigent Johannes Söllner. Er ist es, der die zwei Chöre von Kappel und Ihringen zusammengebracht hat. Beide Vereine sind glücklich darüber, dass die Leipziger Fortbildungszeiten von Herren Söllner endlich vorbei sind und dass er jetzt in Freiburg eingezogen ist. Die Intermezzo Ihringen, ein gemischtes Chor, begann als begann als eine Projektgruppe und ist jetzt eine feste Große neben den Männergesangverein Ihringen. Der Abend begann mit einem Native amerikanischen Lied mit dem Titel: „Evening Rise“ gesungen in Englisch von Intermezzo und Deutsch von MGV-Kappel, wobei beide Chöre sehr gefühlvoll sangen, gefolgt von Ihringen mit ihre einstudierte Welthits von Abba, die renommierte schwedische Band: „Mamma Mia,“ „Money, Money, Money,“ Rod Stewarts „Sailing“ und ein bekanntes Lied mit dem mantrahaftem Refrain „I know, I know, I know.“ Johannes Söllner hat das Publikum in seinen Bann gezogen mit seine charmante, Quiz-master Art und die Zuschauer machten alle Gesangsscherzen mit, wie einst in Kappel bei der Weihnachtskonzert und Brauchtumsabend. Es war eine lebendige Performance, wo die Akteure und das Publikum in dem Frühlingskonzert teilnahmen. Der MGV-Kappel hat bereits dieses Jahr eine Brauchtumsabend mit den Schauinsländer Berggeister mitgestaltet am 17.2.2012. Die Generalversammlung in Gasthaus Kreuz (Kappel) war am 2.3.2012. Weißer Sonntag wird es am 8.5.2012 geben. Der MGV tritt mit dem Kappeler Kindergarten St. Barbara im Marienstift am 20.5.2012. Eine Volkstümlicher Liederabend ist geplant am 26.5.2012, danach die Teilnahme an der Fronleichnamsprozession, gefolgt von geistliches Konzert mit Fahnenweihe am 23.6.2012. Bei der 50.jährige Jubiläum der Schauinslandschule am 23.6.2012 ist der MGV-Kappel auch dabei. Andere wichtige Termine sind Volkstrauertag am 18.11.2012 und das Weihnachtskonzert am 26.12.2012. Außerdem sollen Geburtsjubilare ihrem Wunsch entsprechend geehrt werden. * * * Feierlichen Fahnenweihe (Satis Shroff) An einem sonnigen Samstag am 23.Juni 2012 gab es eine feierliche Fahnenweihe in der Peter und Paul Kirche in Kappel. Die Männer von der MGV „Liederkranz“ kamen mit Richard Linder, der Fahnenträger, in zweier Reihe zu der Kirche, denn der MGV ist der einzige Verein im Ort mit eine restaurierte Vereinsfahne. Herr Klaus Sütterle (Vorsitzender, MGV) hat eine Rede über die Geschichte von der Vereinsfahne und wie es in der Geschichte war mit der fahne und im Verein erzählt. Herr Sütterle meinte:“Unsere Vereinsfahne hat, und wird uns, an unsere Tradition und unsere Aufgaben für die Menschen und den Ort erinnert.“ Dies war der Grund warum der Verein den Herrn Pfarrer Kienzler gebeten hatte, die Fahnenweihe an Stelle eines geistlichen Konzert zu halten. Pfarrer Kienzler, hat eine Rede gehalten über die Bedeutung der Fahne aus der christlichen Sicht. Der dritte Redner war der Ortsvorsteher Hermann Dittmers (CDU). Er erzählte auch über die Bedeutung der traditionsreiche Fahne für Kappel und der Männergesangverein. Er erwähnte: „Wir werden gemeinsam einen neuen Platz für die Vereinsfahne finden.“ Der MGV „Liederkranz“ wurde dirigiert von Johannes Söllner und Herr Klöckner spielte die Kirchenorgel. Es wurden Lieder von der Deutsche Messe von Franz Schubert (1797-1828) gesungen: „Zum Eingang, Zum Gloria, Zum Evangelium und Zum Sanktus.“ Anschließend wurde „Herr, deine Güte reicht so weit“(A.E. Grell,1800-1886) gesungen. Hier muss erwähnt werden, dass Pfarrer Kienzler war es, der die Vereinsfahne nach Bayern brachte, um im Kloster Tyman bei Passau zu den Zisterzienserinnen in der abteieigenen Paramentstickerei restauriert von den Nonnen restauriert zu werden. Ohne die Unterstützung von zahlreicher privater Spender und den Spenden des Ortschaftsrates von Kappel, der katholische Kirchengemeinde St. Peter und Paul, den örtlichen Vereinen und den Vereinen der Chorgruppe Dreisamtal. Klaus Sütterle sagte weiter: „Wir sind allen Spendern sehr dankbar und freuen uns über die Anerkennung unserer Aktivitäten.“ Die Fahne strahlt jetzt nun in neuem Glanz. Beide Fahnenseiten wurden Instand gesetzt. Die Halterung der Fahne wurde neu lackiert und die Lyra, am Ende des Fahnenstabes, aufpoliert. Das Ergebnis ist sehr beeindruckend. Die Männer von der MGV sind wieder Stolz auf ihre Fahne. Nach der kirchlichen Weihe sind alle zum Sektempfang und gemütlichen Beisammen in Gemeindeheim gegangen, wo die Männer von MGV Lieder sangen, wie einst am volkstümlichen Abend. Herr Söllner hat es wie üblich hingekriegt das Publikum zum Mitmachen. * * * Thursday, 12 April 2012 In Freud und Leid, zum Lied bereit (Satis Shroff) (Philipp Klein, Satis Shroff, Franz Lachmann, Richard Linder) MGV-Kappel: In Freud und Leid zum Lied bereit Gesang vermindert dunkle Sorgen (Horaz) Der Gesang ist eine der schönsten Äußerungen des Menschen auf musikalischem Gebiet. Viele Menschen wollen gemeinsam im Chor singen. Beim gemeinschaftlichen Singen kommt viel Zusammen. Man kann sich selbst hören bei den Übungen, die anderen hören im Chor,, dann wieder alles im Zusammenklang im Konzert singen. Wir suchen die Harmonie and es gelingt beim gemeinschaftlichen singen. Die Männerchöre gehen bis in die Zeit Karl Friedrich Zelters (1758-1832) zurück, der in Berlin die Liedertafel, eine Vereinigung von 24 Männern zur Pflege des Gesanges, gründete, die als Modell für alle späteren Männergesangvereine diente. In Kappel hat Karl Fressle, der erster Vorsitzender des 1904 gegründeten Musikvereins Kappel, die initiativ ergriffen. Er wurde Vorsitzender von 1912 bis 1928 und er war es, der bei der Generalversammlung am 30.Mai 1920 den Vorschlag machte, eine Gesangsabteilung zu gründen. Der MGV-Kappel „Liederkranz“ existiert seit 1920 und 92 Jahre alt. In seiner kulturellen Bedeutung ist der MGV „Liederkranz“ ein wichtiger Bestandteil von Freiburg-Kappel. (Vereinsfahne und Klaus Sütterle, MGV-Vorsitzender) Seit 1977 besteht eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Musikverein Kappel und die alljährlich veranstaltete Weihnachtskonzert ist zu einem festen Programmpunkt etabliert. Außerdem haben hat der MGV-Kappel Kooperationen mit Chorvereinigung Hochdorf, Intermezzo Ihringen. Wir pflegen eine langjährigen Kontakt mit unseren Patenchor „Frohsinn“ Littenweiler und auch zu Heinz Heckmann, der letztes Jahr sein 85. Geburtstag feierte, wobei die musikalische Gestaltung von unser Patenchor „Frohsinn“ Littenweiler und der MGV-Kappel unter der Leitung von Sebastian Neumann veranstaltet wurde. Bei Feste in Kappel selbst bekommen wir gegenseitige Unterstützung von den örtlichen Vereine. Der MGV_Kappel singt bei Altentagen, am Weißen Sonntag, beim Weihnachtsbasar, zu Weihnachten in der Kirche und viele anderen Anlässen in Kappel. Dass der MGV-Kappel eine aktive Sängerschaft ist, hat er schon längst bewiesen durch Ausflüge, „Ständerlesingen“ bei Geburtstagen und Jubiläen und vor allem die sängerische Begleitung eines verdienstvollen Mitglieds auf seinem letzten Gang zum Friedhof. Obwohl der MGV-Kappel sehr traditionsbewusst ist im Stadtteil Kappel, er dennoch offen für neue Impulse im Bezug auf seiner Gesangsrepertoire. Der Dirigent Johannes Söllner ist von Leipzig wieder nach Freiburg gezogen nach seiner musikalische Fortbildung dort und er gibt sein Beste in Kappel und Ihringen., wo er zwei Vereine dirigiert. Der MGV-Kappel singt nicht nur Deutsche Liedergut, sondern auch Liedern aus aller Welt (Englische Broadway-songs, Al Martino, spanische, russische, israeli, irische, afrikanische und lateinische Lieder. (Chorvereinigung Hochdorf) Der MGV-Kappel hat bereits dieses Jahr eine Brauchtumsabend mit den Schauinsländer Berggeister mitgestaltet am 17.2.2012. Die Generalversammlung in Gasthaus Kreuz (Kappel) war am 2.3.2012. Weißer Sonntag wird es am 8.5.2012 geben. Der MGV tritt mit dem Kappeler Kindergarten St. Barbara im Marienstift am 20.5.2012. Eine Volkstümlicher Liederabend ist geplant am 26.5.2012, danach die Teilnahme an der Fronleichnamsprozession, gefolgt von geistliches Konzert mit Fahnenweihe am 23.6.2012. Bei der 50.jährige Jubiläum der Schauinslandschule am 23.6.2012 ist der MGV-Kappel auch dabei. Andere wichtige Termine sind Volkstrauertag am 18.11.2012 und das Weihnachtskonzert am 26.12.2012. The ruins of the castle Burgberkenhof looms over the hamlet. And that’s where I went to the New Year’s concert in the Sommerberghalle performed by the Musikverein Buchenbach, where I happen to know quite a few people. In Buchen bach most of the people bear the names Schuler or Maier. What do you expect in a small provincial town in Germany? It was a well-chosen programme and the conductor, an elderly man named Joseph Schuler, who has been conducting since 1983, started the evening with an instrumental marching song ‘A Day of Hope’ composed by the Austrian Fritz Neuböck. If you play a march in Germany, the elderly generation is with you because they’ve heard so many marching songs since their childhood. Today’s generation has a rather USA and UK taste for music with You Tube, Facebook, iPod, iMac download possibilities. The next number was an ouverture Dichter und Bauer composed by Franz von Suppe, who was born in 1890 and arranged by Max Hampel: a comedy with songs about a marriage with a fiery crescendo towards the end. Then came the time of the tuba with the Bombastic Bombardon played by Klaus Mangler and other young solists. This was followed by Lichtblicke, a symphonic fantasy by Kurt Gäble, depicting different lights with music and symbolising the ups and downs of life and the inevitable light in the darkness. Maximillian Maier, a young and talented trumpeteer, then played The Rosecomposed by Amanda McBroom, Bette Middler and Frank Bernaerts. The Rose is a Hollywood movie about the stardom of Janice Joplin and her eventual fall at the hands of a money-hungry manager who makes her appear on-stage till she finally collapses. Auf Ferienreisen composed by Joseph Strauß was the next piece arranged by Herber Maizer. This time even the conductor Joseph Schuler turned up with a big overseas suitcase, donning a Tyroler hat and began furiously with a pacy pokla. Joseph Strauss was the brother of Johann Strauss the King of Waltz melodies like: An der schönen blauen Donau, Wiener Blut, Wein, Weib,Sang and Kaiser Waltz to name a few. After the intermission we were entertained with another concert marching-music: The Thunderer (Der Donnerer) by none other than John Philip Sousa, who composed ‘Stars and Stripes’, the second national anthem of the USA. The audience were delighted when a selection from Starlight Express, which has been staged in Bochum since a long time, was rendered complete with costumed figures from the musical on in-liners. Suddenly, the choreography took a turn towards the East and the orchestra played Harry Richard’s ‘Namaste,’ a greeting from India. A section of the orchestra greeted the audience and the guru (conductor) with folded hands and the German audience laughed because it was outlandish and thus hilarious. The garrulous, bespectacled, bearded moderator did his best to explain what a namaste meant and even brought in a reference to the Third Eye. Actually, when someone in Nepal or India performs a ‘namaste’ it means: ‘I greet the Godliness in you!’ La Storia was a film by Jacob de Haan evoking images of the Tosca (Italy) followed by a melange from the musical ‘Mary Poppins’ composed by Richard and Robert Shermann and arranged by Ted Ricketts. After the concert I talked with Ursula Fruttiger, who plays the flute in the Musikverein Buchenbach, which has at the moment 70 active musicians, and the repertoire ranges from traditional works to classic and modern. Asked when the Musikverein plays, Ursula replied with a broad smile, ‘We play in the community on different occasions and our music is a bit religious and also worldly. We also take part in the activities of the other associations (vereins). When our members have birthdays or round anniversaries.’ Now isn’t that a nice thought? I remembered the last time when the Männergesangverein came and sang songs like ‘Mein guter Freund’, ‘Heimat’ and other touching traditional songs. I had tears of joy in my eyes. Ursula went on to say, ‘We have Maiwecken on the 1st of May and play music every year at another place in the hamlet and the local Buchenbacher love it. The New Year’s Concert in the Sommerberghalle is very popular among the locals as well as people from the surrounding hamlets and towns. We also get invited by other music associations and they visit us during the during our annual Musikhock in the old quarry. I was amazed at the many young boys and girls who were in the orchestra. In the case of the country’s men’s choirs the olde boys are dying out and there’s difficulty in motivating young people to join the traditional vereins. They’d rather rave, listen and dance to techno, rap,hip-hop and other music and songs. Ursula Fruttiger came up with, ‘Besides our orchestra, we have also a youth-band with 30 young musicians. After a successful exam in the bronze performance category, the young people become full-fledged members of the orchestra. Some of the youth then play in big orchestras. ‘At what age can you join the Musikverein?’ I asked Ursula. ‘We teach 8- year olds to play a brass instrument and the instrument is provided by the Musikverein, and we also finance the musical education. The two vereins play host in alternating years. The concert began at 8pm in the Kappeler Festhalle. We did a last rehearsal in the media-room of the Schauinsland school in Kappel. Christel barged into the room and exclaimed, in a tearful voice, ‘The guests have started pouring in and there’s no one to greet them and take care of the tickets.’ That worked like a signal and we started to descend the stairs towards the Festhalle. There were concert-guests taking off their thick winter overcoats, and helping their ladies out of their fur coats. The members of the musikverein were guests gathered in the foyer. There was no chaos. Everything was under control. The concert began with the Project Orchestra of the Musikverein conducted by Rainer Heuberger. They played popular instrumentals such as: Amazing Grace, the Pink Panther, My Romance, a Christmas medley, the Little Town of Bethlehem and Hawk. Most of the musicians were young boy barely in their teens, which is a good thing since there is a dearth of German youth in the singing and music choirs. This time, we the Kappeler men’s choir, began with ‘Il est ne,le divin enfant´, a French song, followed by a beautiful yodel-song from Tyrole (Austria): ‘Andachtsjodler.’ The next song was the popular ‘Fröhliche Weihnacht überall’which was originally a song from England. Someone had absent-mindedly locked up the piano and the pianist started looking for the keys in his pockets and elsewhere. All the while under the scrutiny of a silent, tolerant audience. Perhaps they thought this was a gag, but it wasn’t. Finally Werner Walter asked the conductor who’d played the piano whether he had the keys. And voila! He had ’em in his raised left hand. In such a constellation you have to have a few gospel and spiritual songs, and accordingly ‘Oh, Happy Day’ with Christoph Fuss as the lead singer, and ‘My Lord, What a Morning’ was sung to the delight of the audience. A song that conjoured up images of South Africa was ‘Aya Ngena’ sung in Swaheli by the Männergesangverein, and promises of peace in the Middle East with ‘Hora Jerusalem.’ The Hebrew accents that we’d learned all these weeks and the fast tempi of the song got the audience raving. The Musikverein Freiburg-Kappel came up with a project-orchestra conducted by Rainer Heuberger for this special occasion. The repertoire had ‘Gaillarde’ Pierre d’ Attaignant’ with arrangements by Manu Mellaerts, ‘And the Mountains Echoed: Gloria’ by Robert Longfield. Then came ‘Der Zigeunerbaron’ composed by Johann Strauss and arranged by Akira Yodo. Another song is from the musical ‘Elizabeth’ composed by Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay with arrangements by Johan de Meij, followed by ‘Czardas’ by Vittorio Monti and arranged by Jan Rypens. The solist was Felix Klein. The musical arrangements were rather long but there was variety in the pieces, so it wasn’t that bad. The moderators were Klaus Suetterle for the MGV Kappel and Karin Peter, who had an East-Bloc accent, for the Musikverein Kappel. After the concert it was a comfortable get-together and Miteinander in the Festhalle and the bar downstairs. The day after the Festhalle was cleared of everything that resembled a concert hall. We did it with German thoroughness: pico bello.

Commentary: NSA Issue: Storm in a Tea Cup? (Satis Shroff) After the speech of the US President and the interview with Klaus Kleber (ZDF), two positions were defined but no change of course, and the work of the NSA was defended by President Obama. The latter emphasized that small correction will be undertaken and friendly states will be further tapped if the national security demands it. Even Chancellor Merkel is expected to take the matter lightly. The reason is that Germany doesn’t belong to the same category of friends, and doesn’t enjoy the same status, as Britain, New Zealand and Australia. It’s an open secret that Britain tends to fraternise more with the USA than with Europe due to historical reasons. After all Britain is the mother country of the thirteen original colonies of the USA, and the English language is common; although the founding fathers believed in a shared philosophy rather than linguistic unity as illustrated by foreign accents which are typical features of American speech. More and more US states have declared English as the official language to ward off the Hispanic, migratory expansion within its population. Britain and the USA have shown mutual support in military matters: the USA came to the rescue of Britain in the World War I and II. Britain supported the USA in Korea and Vietnam. The USA helped Britain win the Falklands in 1982 (Thatcher era) and later both countries fought in the Gulf War in 1991, and also during the Hindukush war. Given all these mutual military operations, it’s only normal for the USA to regard Britain as its most reliable and staunchest ally and friend across the Atlantic. On the other hand, Britain tries to reconcile the US and EU interests, even though PM Cameron has remained reluctant towards an European Union membership, much like his predecessors. London doesn’t want to lose its competence to Brussels. During the German Unity celebration in Stuttgart where I was invited, the Federal President Dr. Gauck stated that Germany ought to take an active part in the diverse military operations of the Nato and the US and not remain a passive logistic supplier. Germany’s next move in this direction is to send the German-French brigade to Africa to support France. It might be mentioned that Germany has been training the Afghan policemen since a number of years, even though there are doubts whether they will be able to withstand the Taliban attacks in the future. With the collapse of the Iron Curtain around 1990 the USA gained supremacy as a superpower and world police. The EU is strong as an economic power but rather weak as a political unity. When strategic decisions have to be made, the US President is way ahead in comparison to the leaders in Brussels. On the other hand Brussels has gained strength as a competitor on the world markets, in addition to Russia, China, India and other Asian Tiger states. Industrial espionage isn’t new, and the USA isn’t the only nation that taps the world, despite the warnings of Snowden. It is only normal that the US takes the defence of its own national security and its national interests seriously. Finding and maintaining an equilibrium between citizen’s rights and national security is a delicate balance, and what President Obama has promised was not a sweeping change in the activities of the NSA; which is furthermore obliged to collect communication data world wide in the form of e-mails and calls. The NSA collects 200 million sms-messages each day. The USA isn’t interested in curbing its own activities through a no-spying-agreement with Berlin. President Omaba does want to regain and restore the confidence of his foreign colleagues. But national security has top priority as usual. The European and South American leaders and citizens will have to comply and follow a policy of appeasement towards the USA. That’s all. According to a German political barometer, the average German citizen is more concerned about the new waves of immigration than about the NSA-issue. Other relevant themes are the employment-markets and jobs, old age pension and gerontological security, the development of consumer prices and wages. Date protection and data collection by secret services interests only 3% and has a rating of place 15. Believe it or not, not a single German citizen sought help from the fundamental Law Court in Karlsruhe regarding the NSA-issue, which normally receives 6000 constitutional complaints annually. Is this is sign of tiredness with the espionage them or resignation? As far as the future is concerned, the USA and its Nato allies will have to move towards a common understanding on how the secret services can get along and coordinate with each other at a high level, even though the interests of the USA and UK and the Nato vary in such matters. In Europe the secret services become active only when an individual is suspected, whereas the British and US secret services collect all available information data first, then evaluate it and seek out suspected persons and terrorist-cells in their own and foreign countries. Be that as it may, the Nato secret services need the USA and vice versa: the free trade agreement between Europe and the US is a poor card in this game, for both parties have a lot to lose. The message is clear: united we stand, divided we fall.

Germany: Singing in Joy and Suffering (Satis Shroff, Schriftführer, MGV-Kappel) Tags: foret noire, lovely kappel, vorsitzender, klaus suetterle, black forest, MGV-Kappel, schwarzwald, satisshroff, schriftführer, Singing in Joy and Suffering (Satis Shroff) The Männergesangverein is a typical men’s choir from the Black Forest town of Kappel, which belongs to Freiburg. It’s motto is: In Freud und Leid, zum singen bereit, that is, ‘Ready with a Song, in Joy and Suffering.’ Singing is the most beautiful articulation of humans in the musical domain. When we sing in a choir, we come together. You can hear yourself, others and then hear all together in chorus. You seek the harmony, and you find this when you sing together. This feeling of togetherness binds us in a choir. In Germany the men’s choir dates back to the times of Karl Friedrich Zelters (1758-1832) who founded the Liedertafel in Berlin in the year 1809, which was an association (verein) with 24 men. The aim was to promote singing and this verein served as a model for all choirs later. In Kappel it was Karl Freßle who took the initiative and founded the Musikverein-Kappel in the year 1904. He was the chairman from 1912 till 1928, and he was the one who suggested at the general meeting on May 30,1920 that a men’s choir be initiated. The MGV-Kappel exists since 1920 and is ninety-two years old. The MGV-Kappel is of cultural importance in Kappel, just as the Musikverein. Between the Musikverein and the MGV-Kappel there’s a co-operation since the founding days and the two associations organise their concerts together, especially the Weihnachts (Christmas) Concert, which has become a tradition. The concerts are hosted by the two vereins alternatively each year. ‘When does the MGV-Kappel sing in public?’ you are inclined to ask. It sings on White Sunday, at the Christmas Bazaar, during Weihnachten in the Kirche, as the church is called in German, and a lot of other occasions throughout the year. The MGV-Kappel ‘Liederkranz’ has often given evidence to the fact that it’s an active verein through its excursions with its members, ständerlesingen (singing on round birthdays and at funerals when a dear citizen or singer has passed away, after which the MGV renders the deceased the last accompaniment to the local graveyard in Kappel. Although the MGV-Kappel is a very tradition-conscious verein in Kappel and the Dreisam Valley, it has shown that it is open new impulses. The conductor Johannes Söllner has at last returned to Freiburg from Leipzig where he’d gone for his further studies, and as a result had to shuttle between Freiburg and Leipzig. It might be mentioned that he’s the conductor of both choirs: MGV-Kappel and Intermezzo Ihringen. The latter is a mixed choir, since the elderly generation is dying out, and it is getting increasingly difficult to acquire new, young male members. There is a clash of interest and taste as far as the choice of songs are concerned. Whereas the elderly members want to stick to their olde German songs, the younger generation want rap, hip-hop and pop-songs and music from the UK and the US-charts. The MGV-Kappel has been increasing its international repertoire of songs with lyrics in Latin, Spanish, English, African, Hebrew and Russian languages. According to Arthur Schopenhauer: music is the melody to which the world is the text. And it’s amazing how music and songs connect people. The MGV-Kappel has early this year staged a Brauchtumsabend (February 17, 2012) in which old and new traditional stories were told to the accompaniment of music and songs, because a society changes and goes with the influences of the times. This would have been different in the former conserved German societies of Schlesian and the Siebenburgen (Seven Hills) in Romania, where the ethnic Germans living in these countries wanted to preserve their culture from the Czechkoslovakian and Romanian mainstream. Elderly Germans who were repatriated to Germany later found that the German language and the country and its people had other norms and values. They’d just gone with the times, and as a result were suddenly strangers to their ethnic brethens from ‘conserved’ cultural backgrounds. It’s a pity that Kappel doesn’t have a Trachtenverein.Oberried and St. Peter and many parts of the Schwarzwald have maintained their old traditional garb, pretty hats and other costumes and parade in such clothes on special days, which is not only a delight for the tourists but also for the cultural heritage of a country. In the Freiburger area alone there are 3500 vereins. The general meeting took place as usual at the Gasthaus Kreuz (Kappel) on March 2, 2012. The MGV-Kappel was invited by the choir Intermezzo Ihringen on April 14,2012. We sang the following songs: Evening Rise (a Native American song), s’Herz, Heil Dir Heilige Himmelskönigin, Good News, Durchs Wieseltal gang i. Intermezzo Ihringen sang no wine songs, even though Ihringen lies in the sunniest area of Germany. Intermezzo shone with world hits in English, and borrowed a great deal from the Swedish group Abba to the delight of the audience. Er hat sechs Bücher geschrieben: Im Schatten des Himalaya (Gedichte und Prosa), Through Nepalese Eyes (Reisebericht), Katmandu, Katmandu (Gedichte und Prosa mit Nepali autoren) Glacial Whispers (Gedichtesammlung zwischen 1997-2010). Er hat zwei Sprachführer im Auftrag von Horlemannverlag und Deutsche Stiftung für Entwicklungsdienst (DSE) für Auslandsmitarbeiter der GTZ, sowie Goethe Institut, DAAD, Carl Duisburg Gesellschaft etc. geschrieben. Satish Shroff hat mehrere Artikel in seiner ehemaligen Zeitung „The Rising Nepal“ über verschiedene Aspekte von Leben und Entwicklungen in Deutschland und Europa veröffentlicht. Er schreibt regelmäßig in The American Chronicle (www.americanchronicle.com/authors/view/1207 und viele andere Zeitschriften. Außerdem drei Artikeln über die Gurkhas, Achtausender und Nepals Symbolen für Nelles Verlags ‚Nepal’ und über Hinduismus in „Nepal: Myths & Realities (Book Faith India). Sein Gedicht „Mental Molotovs“ wurde im epd-Entwicklungsdienst (Frankfurt) veröffentlicht. Seine Lyrik sind in Slow Trains, International Zeitschrift, World Poetry Society (WPS), New Writing North, Muses Review, The Megaphone, Pen Himalaya, Interpoetry publiziert worden. Meine Arbeit Katmandu, Katmandu Satis Shroff’s anthology is about a poet caught between upheavals in two countries, Nepal and Germany, where maoists and skin-heads are trying to undermine democratic values, religious and cultural life. Satis Shroff writes political poetry, in German and English, about the war in Nepal (My Nepal, Quo vadis?), the sad fate of the Nepalese people (My Nightmare, Only Sagarmatha Knows), the emergence of neo-fascism in Germany (Mental Molotovs, The Last Tram to Littenweiler) and love (The Broken Poet, Without Words, About You), women’s woes (Nirmala, Bombay Brothel).
